With the help of the Great Plains Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Sycamore Hills Elementary students learned first-hand about the character trait of compassion. During the school’s recent character assembly to kick off their service project for Great Plains, students met ‘Captain,’ one of the many beneficiaries of their generosity, and received a list of much-needed items at the shelter. Sycamore Hills students responded and collected a carload of supplies for ‘Captain’ and a host of other furry friends.

“It is a wonderful partnership (between Sycamore Hills and Great Plains),” said Ellen Klausen, school counselor. “The students and the shelter have already benefited.”

Klausen said not only did the school benefit from their hands-on lesson about compassion, fifth-grade members of the school’s character council, the Caring Cougars, received a little love from ‘Captain’ before the assembly!
