It was raining and chilly anyway, so what lay ahead probably didn’t matter for 15 Van Horn High School JROTC and National Honor Society students. Those 15 and hundreds of others from across the Kansas City area dove into the 36 degree waters of Longview Lake for Polar Plunge 2015, benefiting Missouri Special Olympics. “Those frozen Falcons took the plunge about 11:15 a.m.,” said Robin Rockhold, Van Horn’s library manager. “It was a unique opportunity for the students to show their support for Missouri Special Olympics by jumping into Longview Lake’s frigid winter water.”

Van Horn students raised nearly $1,000 during the January 31 event.

“A special thank you goes out to those students and the people who sponsored them,” Rockhold said.

Proceeds benefited Missouri Special Olympics year-round sports programs for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. There are nearly 20 Polar Plunge events held across Missouri every winter.
