Charlene BurnsCharlene Burns, Bingham Middle School teacher, is one of just two Missouri winners of the Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award by the National History Day organization. She is now eligible for the National Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award June 18- an award given to two educators along with a check for $10,000 each.

“National History Day firmly believes that quality teachers are the best educational tools that students have,” said Cathy Gorn, National History Day executive director. “Teachers like Ms. Burns, selected as Behring award recipients, are a credit to their discipline and exemplify what it takes to be a quality educator.”

Middle and high school teachers can be nominated for the honor. For winning the state award, Burns received $500.

Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award winners have demonstrated excellence in the classroom by using creative teaching methods to interest students about history. This award is named for the wife of Ken Behring, who began his philanthropic support of NHD in order to “improve the teaching and learning of history at middle and high schools throughout the country.”

Established more than 30 years ago, NHD is a nonprofit educational organization offering academic programs engaging more than 500,000 students around the world in historic endeavors.
