Original Works from ISD Students Debut on Coterie Stage May 17

Posted May 7, 2015

Two ISD students, Truman High School’s Sonny Erstad and Van Horn High School’s Joely King, had their original works selected for performance in The Coterie Theatre’s Young Playwrights’ Festival Sunday, May 17 at 7 p.m. on the Coterie stage inside Crown Center, 2450 Grand Ave. Erstad’s work, Mask of the Needy, and King’s effort, Lady Like, were among just a select few chosen for presentation.

Both were invited to the Roundtable through their participation in The Coterie’s Reaching the Write Minds playwriting workshop. Erstad has been on the Roundtable since December 2013, King since March 2014.   “Members of the Roundtable work to create their own plays or monologues through the course of the year,” said Jeff Church, The Coterie’s artistic director. “During those workshop sessions, members listened, critiqued and provided feedback to each other in order to develop their work.”

King’s work is a part of a new three-way collaboration called WORDS + MUSIC, featuring teen playwrights from The Coterie, opera composers from UMKC Conservatory and performers from the Lyric Opera.  The three worked together to create opera moments from an adaptation of King’s original piece.

Tickets for the festival are $5 and available at the Coterie box office. For more information or to make reservations, call (816) 474-6552 or go to their website- www.thecoterie.org.
