DSC_0024aDSC_0019aMore than 20 businesses, churches and community organizations were honored during the district’s annual Fan of “Dr. Bob” Appreciation Luncheon June 4. Those recognized exemplify positive character traits daily and assist ISD schools in implementing the district’s character education program.

During his opening remarks, ISD Superintendent Dr. Dale Herl thanked “Dr. Bob” participants for their support. “It (character education) is obviously a large part of what we try to instill throughout the school district,” he said, “and you’re a big part of that.”

“Dr. Bob” is the ISD’s character mascot- named after the late Robert “Dr. Bob” Clothier. “Dr. Bob” dedicated his life to the health and welfare of children in Independence- spending 38 years as a pediatrician before donating his time and energy to public service as a member of the ISD school board. He was a man of character who inspired those around him. He died in 2009, but his wife Sharon is still very involved in the program and attended the luncheon.

Businesses, civic organizations and faith-based groups interested in becoming a Fan of “Dr. Bob” can contact Dr. Janet Richards, the ISD’s character program coordinator, at (816) 521-5300.
