ISD Schools Honor, Thank Veterans for Service to Country

In school cafeterias and gymnasiums throughout the ISD, military veterans were recognized and thanked during a variety of unique and heartfelt Veterans Day programs and assemblies.

For the third straight year, fifth-grade students at Luff Elementary planned and performed during their assembly. Fifth-graders sang several songs, including Thankful for the U.S.A. and read aloud about the history and importance of the holiday.

More than 70 veterans received a standing ovation from Bridger Middle School students during their Veterans Day celebration. Truman High School JROTC instructor, Sgt. Michael Nold was the guest speaker, but before he stepped to the podium, Bridger Principal Jeff Williams spoke about the essence of military service.

“Many of them (veterans present) didn’t ask to leave their homes to fight on distant battlefields,” Williams said. “Many didn’t even volunteer. They didn’t go to war because they loved fighting. They were called to be part of something bigger than themselves.

“They were ordinary people who responded in extraordinary ways in extreme times. They rose to the nation’s call because they wanted to protect a nation which has given them, and us, so much.”

Bridger’s choir led everyone in the Star Spangled Banner and sang a stirring rendition of the Battle Hymn for Gettysburg.

Inside Sycamore Hills Elementary, nearly 50 veterans were honored during their assembly. Truman High School JROTC cadets presented the colors and Student Council Secretary Max Nickens led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. Principal Amber Miller welcomed veterans and visitors alike, then the fifth-grade performed a variety of patriotic songs.

Similar Veterans Day ceremonies were held at schools throughout the ISD.
