Dr. Linda Gray Smith - Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources

Dr. Linda Gray Smith joined the Independence School District as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources in 2011. Dr. Smith came to the district with experience serving as superintendent of the Chillicothe R-II School District and of the Worth County R-III School District. As a principal in Lamoni, Iowa, Dr. Smith worked with the middle school and the elementary school. Starting her career as an elementary teacher and a secondary English teacher, Dr. Smith also worked as a language arts and school improvement consultant in the area education agency system in Iowa.

Holding a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Iowa State University, Dr. Smith’s master’s degree and undergraduate degree are from Northwest Missouri State University.

When not working in her office or around the district, Dr. Smith can often be found in the district’s Wellness Center trying new fitness classes, or riding her bike around Independence. Dr. Smith has three grown children and three grandchildren.

Cindy Grant Human Resources Director

Cindy Grant serves as Human Resources Director while Linda Gray Smith remains the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources.   Grant first joined the Independence School District in 1992 as a School of the 21st Century Program teacher’s assistant.  After earning her undergraduate degree in elementary education in 1997 at Rockhurst University, she was hired as an elementary school teacher at Glendale Elementary.  In 2004, Grant became a District Mentor Teacher.  In 2006, Mrs. Grant was hired as the Elementary School Principal at Randall Elementary.  Currently Grant is working toward her Educational Doctorate in Leadership and Policy Analysis through the University of Missouri, Columbia. Grant earned her undergraduate degree in elementary education at Rockhurst University.  Mrs. Grant has also earned an Educational Specialist Degree of Administration from William Woods University and Master’s Degree from Webster University.  She is also a graduate of Truman High School.  Grant has served as Principal at Randall Elementary since 2006, Grant’s teaching and leadership skills have been spotlighted with presentations at several professional conferences. In her spare time, Grant can be found spending time with her husband and two children running to multiple sporting events.
