YouthFriends connects young people with caring adult volunteers in schools to promote success, encourage healthy behaviors and build stronger communities. A highly successful initiative of the Independence School District for more than 14 years, YouthFriends is open to all students in grades K-12.

Volunteer mentors, who range from college students to senior citizens, typically spend one hour a week with one or more students, eating lunch, reading, enjoying recess together, discussing careers or just being  friends. Activities take place on school grounds during regular school hours. Both individual student and group activities are available. All volunteers are screened and trained.

Research shows students with YouthFriends mentors are more confident and do better at setting and achieving goals. To learn more about getting your student involved in YouthFriends contact your school.  For more information about becoming a YouthFriends volunteer, please contact:
