Truman Club Receives National Charter, Prepares to Send Backpacks to Honduras

Posted April 12, 2016

Truman High School’s Interact Club- a Rotary Club-sponsored organization- received their National Charter from the Independence Rotary Club April 12. Interact sponsor Levi Goes and four student-officers- Molly Whiting, Kaili Miller, Reagen Siebert and Yvette Rito- accepted the charter during the club’s weekly meeting and announced plans for a service project, sending backpacks to needy students in Honduras.

“The Rotary Club wanted us to pick a bigger project to celebrate our charter,” Goes said, “so our club decided to send backpacks to Honduras. The project will be funded by a Rotary Club grant and we’ll start on it this fall.”

The Interact Club has been active at Truman for several years, organizing numerous service projects throughout the year including the school’s blood drive. Outside school, Truman’s club participates in many charitable civic events including selling benefit newspapers before the Kansas City Royals home opener to send students with special needs to a Rotary-sponsored summer camp.  The Truman club is also planning a book drive next year for elementary-age students.

Interact, created for teenagers ages 12-18, stands for International Action and carries out service projects based on four elements- Community Service, Finance, International Understanding and Club Service. There are approximately 9,000 Interact Clubs worldwide with nearly 210,000 members.
