District Honors 2016 McCoy Awards Recipients

Posted November 16, 2016

Proud parents, guardians, families and teachers filled the William Chrisman High School auditorium to honor 150 recipients of the McCoy Award.  The award is given to students from Truman, Van Horn and William Chrisman for academic excellence during their first four semesters of high school. Each recipient took the stage and was presented their McCoy medal.

“Receiving this medal says a lot about you,” Superintendent Dr. Dale Herl told the students, “who you are and where you are going.  It says that you are tenacious. To reach this point academically, you have had to go the extra mile.”

The superintendent said most of the honorees were also very involved in extracurricular activities in school, making their academic achievements even more impressive.

“This is a tribute to that work ethic. It’s something that sets you apart.”

First established in 1902, the McCoy Award is named after William McCoy, the first mayor of Independence. In 1984, the Independence Board of Education reinstated the McCoy Award and since then, more than 3,000 ISD high school students have received the prestigious McCoy medal.
