ISD Offers Life-Saving Free Swim Program

Posted January 3, 2019

The Independence School District has partnered with the YMCA to offer free swim lessons to every second grade student in the ISD.  Nearly 500 2nd grade students will take advantage of the opportunity between January and April.

Independence Superintendent Dr. Dale Herl says, “This program ensures the safety of our students in the water and it ties in with the Independence School District’s focus on health and wellness for all of our students. It’s a wonderful partnership with the YMCA and we are pleased to be able to offer this opportunity to our students.”

Learn to Swim introduces a series of easy to learn skills to the non-swimmer in a values-based environment. The program takes place at Henley Aquatic Center at Bridger Middle School.

The YMCA has worked diligently to secure donations and grants to support the program.  The Independence School District provides transportation, lifeguards, and even swimsuits if a child is unable to afford one. The training is free to students.

Trevor Tomney, Director of Henley Aquatic Center in the ISD says, “This is an opportunity to make kids aware of the risks of being in and around water. It’s also important to help these students build swimming skills and confidence. It’s fun to see them learn and grow and I’ve had numerous parents here in the Independence School District tell me how thankful they are for this program.”
