All ISD Schools Closed, Students Returning Monday, April 27

ISD Parents and Guardians – Updated Friday, March 27, 2020

*Our schools will remain closed through at least April 24th.

Student Meal Supports

We are excited to share that we are expanding our student meal supports beginning on Monday, March 30. ISD bus drivers will utilize our high school bus routes to deliver meals at bus stops daily. Please verify your nearest bus stop and time by visiting our website www.isdschools.org. You will find a bus icon on the home page that will allow you to enter your student ID number to find the stop nearest you and the time the bus will be there daily. Please arrive at the stop 5 minutes before the specified time. Buses may arrive up to 10 minutes before the listed stop time or 10 minutes after. Please maintain social distancing from others waiting at stops for meals and also from our bus drivers. When the bus pulls up to each stop, please wait while maintaining social distancing. Our ISD team will distribute “grab and go” lunches (which will also include breakfast for the following day). We appreciate your patience and understanding, especially on Monday as we launch this effort. Meals are available for children 18 and younger. Parents should escort children to stops. It is not mandatory for students to be present to receive meals.

We will also continue serving “grab and go” lunches (which will also include breakfast for the following day) to all children under the age of 18 from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Bridger Middle School, Truman High School, Van Horn High School and William Chrisman High School. Parents can drive up along the front entrance drive and our staff can bring those grab and go meals out so you do not need to get out of your vehicle.

Please keep in mind that we want all of our students to be able to access these meals. We will have plenty of meals to go around so please do not hesitate to take advantage of these meals for the children in your household. This is also an important way our bus drivers and nutrition services team members can continue to serve as they are essential personnel while serving and delivering meals.

Chromebooks and Pre K-5 Printed Packets

If you would like to pick-up a Chromebook, please email helpme@isdschools.org.  Parents will need to sign a waiver for the Chromebook. Our Technology Department will scheduled a time for you to pick-up a Chromebook from Central Office.

Parents can pick-up Pre K-5 printed packets Monday-Friday during our lunch distribution. These will be available for pick-up at Bridger Middle School, Truman High School, Van Horn High School and William Chrisman High School between the hours of 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Printed packets are currently for the first 10 days of our online instruction. New packets will be available for pick-up with days 11-15 beginning on Monday, April 6.

Virtual Learning

We are very proud of the Virtual Learning Resources available online for Early Education and K-12 at www.isdschool.org. All ISD teachers are working hard on new lessons to add to our Virtual Learning Resources. On Monday, April 6th, parents and students will be able to access a daily schedule for each grade level from Early Education through 8th grade. High school students will also have new lessons beginning on April 6th. New Virtual Learning Resources will be added daily in both core classes and elective coursework.

We will continue to add to these optional, supplemental learning opportunities. Most lessons have corresponding YouTube videos. All linked videos allow you to utilize closed captioning and select the language of your choice.

The Independence School District is first and foremost an institution of learning. While these activities are not a replacement for classroom instruction, we are committed to providing educational opportunities for students throughout this closure.

Fuel Education (Fuel Ed) for Middle School and High School

In addition to the incredible content developed by our ISD team, all middle and high school students are also being placed into additional supplemental, online courses through Fuel Education (Fuel Ed).

Counselors and Instructional Coaches have been placing students in classes corresponding with their current class schedule.

You will receive emails from peaksupport@getfueled.com. These will be delivered to student school email addresses and one parent email address pulled from Power School.  The email will detail login procedures and credentials.

Graduation

We are receiving questions regarding graduation. At this time, we still have graduation scheduled for Saturday, May 23rd. We are sorry that we do not have concrete answers due to the evolving situation with COVID-19. As we receive information from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and/or other state and local leaders, we will share that information with our staff and families.

We have received a few questions regarding cap and gown pick-up. If your school cap and gown pick-up is scheduled prior to our scheduled return of April 27th, cap and gown information will be shared out as we get closer to that time. If parents have questions specific to Jostens, you will need to reach out directly to Jostens to work through any requests.

Grades and Testing

Grades are frozen until further notice. Teachers will not require work to be completed during this closure (including AP courses). Teachers will continue to accept work from students that was assigned prior to March 13. Make-up work after that date will not be assigned. Staff members will work to support students in work completion. We will follow college and university recommendations for Dual Credit classes.

DESE has cancelled state-wide assessments for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.

Appropriate Use of Technology

Students utilizing Chromebooks must use this District technology appropriately. The use of these technology tools enhances instructional delivery during our school closure. The District has installed technology protection measures for all computers in the District, which block and/or filter content. That filter, alerts the District to misuse or attempts at misuse. If students attempt to utilize content that is not for academic purposes, accounts may be locked to prevent further use.

Security

Out of an abundance of caution, we have increased security around the clock at all of our schools and buildings.

Central Office

Essential Central Office employees will continue to work at CO. If you need any assistance from Central Office employees, please call 816-521-5300.
