Early Education

The Independence School District is dedicated to providing a high-quality early education curriculum that lays a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Recognizing the critical importance of engaging young learners, the district offers one of the largest Early Education programs in Missouri, serving children from birth (six weeks) to age five.

At the heart of the ISD's early education approach is The Creative Curriculum, an evidence-based program that emphasizes active, play-based learning. This curriculum is designed to foster children's cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development through hands-on experiences and exploration. Daily routines in classrooms encourage children to be planners, decision-makers, and problem-solvers, engaging in activities such as dramatic play, art, science, and nature walks.

The ISD's Early Education program is not only focused on academic readiness but also on building self-worth, confidence, and resilience in children and their families. By partnering closely with families, the program supports the development of school readiness and later school success.

The ISD ensures that early education is accessible and inclusive through two early education buildings, Hanthorn and Sunshine Center, as well as early education sites at ten of our 20 elementary schools and one at Truman High School. Through a comprehensive approach that integrates curriculum, family engagement, and community support, the ISD is committed to nurturing the potential of every child from the very beginning of their educational journey.
