1st Grade Art

The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course.

August - December

Strand 1: Create (Investigate, Plan, Make, Refine)

  • Explore art-making in a group or small table setting.
  • Explore uses of materials and tools to create works of art or design.
  • Show proper and safe techniques with various art materials.
  • Identify and classify uses of everyday objects through drawings, diagrams, sculptures, or other visual means.
  • Use art vocabulary to describe choices while creating art.
    • Identify/create a variety of lines, shapes, and textures.
    • Identify/create with value.
    • Identify/create: still life and portraits.
    • Identify/create with shapes.

Strand 2: Present (Display, Express)

  • Select, analyze, and interpret artistic work for presentation.
    • Explain why some objects, artifacts, and artwork are valued over others.
  • Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation.
    • Ask and answer questions such as where, when, why and how artwork should be prepared for presentation or preservation.

Strand 3: Respond (Perceive, Analyze, Interpret)

  • Perceive and analyze artistic work.
    • Select and describe works of art that illustrate daily life experiences of one’s self and others.
    • Compare images that represent the same subject.
  • Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work.
    • Interpret art by categorizing subject matter and identifying its characteristics.
  • Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work.
    • Classify artwork based on different reasons for preferences.

Strand 4:  Connect (Synthesize, Relate)

  • Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art.
    • Identify times, places, and reasons by which students make art outside of school.
  • Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural, and historical context to deepen understanding.
    • Understand that people from different places and times have made art for a variety of reasons.

January - May

Strand 1: Create (Investigate, Plan, Make, Refine)

  • Explore art-making in a group or small table setting.
  • Use observation and investigation to prepare to make art.
  • Explore uses of materials and tools to create works of art or design.
  • Show proper and safe techniques with various art materials.
  • Identify and classify uses of everyday objects through drawings, diagrams, sculptures, or other visual means.
  • Use art vocabulary to describe choices while creating art.
    • Identify/create forms.
    • Identify/create with primary colors.
    • Identify/create a sense of space.
    • Identify/create a pattern.
    • Identify/create a  landscape, and non-objective art.

Strand 2: Present (Display, Express)

  • Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation.
    • Ask and answer questions such as where, when, why, and how artwork should be prepared for presentation or preservation.
  • Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work.
    • Identify the roles and responsibilities of people who work in and visit museums and other art venues.
