1st Grade Counseling

The following learning targets represent the major concepts addressed in the Guidance Curriculum.

August - December

Unit 1: Understanding Self as an Individual and as a Member of Diverse Local and Global Communities 

  • Identify a variety of feelings. 
  • Identify personal roles in the school 
  • Recognize personal character traits.  

Unit 2: Applying personal safety skills and coping strategies

  • Identify steps of problem solving and decision making for personal safety.
  • Identify personal safety strategies. 
  • Recognize the effects of life changes or events related to self. 

Unit 3: Applying the skills of transitioning between educational levels  

  • Identify increased school expectations. 

Unit 4: Interacting with others in ways that respect individual and group differences 

  • Demonstrate the ability to be a friend. 
  • Identify similarities and differences among students within the  school community. 
  • Express feelings both verbally and non-verbally. 

January - May

Unit 5: Developing and monitoring individual career academic plan (ICAP) Goal, setting, education plan

  • Demonstrate the skills needed to be a successful learner. 

Unit 6: Applying career exploration and planning skills in the achievement of life career goals 

  • Identify strengths and interests at home and school. 
  • Identify workers in the local community related to the six career paths. 
  • Explain the importance of jobs in the family and school.  

Unit 7:  Knowing where and how to obtain information about the world of work and post-secondary training/education 

  • Identify and compare roles and responsibilities of workers within the school. 
  • Identify the skills needed by workers in the school. 

Unit 8:  Applying skills for career readiness and success

  • Identify and develop personal, ethical, and work habit skills needed for school success. 
  • Understand how helper jobs are assigned in the classroom. 

Unit 9:  Applying personal safety skills and coping strategies

  • Identify steps of problem solving and decision making for personal safety.
  • Identify personal safety strategies. 
  • Recognize the effects of life changes or events related to self.
