1st Grade Music
The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course.
August - December
Unit 1: Connect with Music
- Students will learn how music relates to daily life including special events, books, artwork, science and/or other subjects.
- Students will learn how to make choices such as selecting movements or instruments.
Unit 2: Respond to Music
- Students will learn how to describe music that they hear using words such as forte, piano, presto, largo, smooth, separated, higher, lower, and patriotic.
- Students will learn how to explain why they prefer one song or musical style over another.
January - May
Unit 3: Perform Music
- Students will learn to perform music accurately and expressively for assessments and performances.
- Students will learn how to read and perform rhythm patterns including quarter notes, quarter rests, and pairs of eighth notes.
Unit 4: Create Music
- Students will learn to create new musical ideas such as an answer to a musical question or music that matches a certain mood.
- Students will learn how to record their own musical ideas using written symbols or recording technology such as audio or video.
