Kindergarten & 1st Grade Physical Education

The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course.

August - December

Unit 1: Locomotors

  • Kindergarten
    • Performs locomotor skills (hopping, galloping, running, sliding, skipping) while maintaining balance
    • Performs jumping & landing actions with balance
  • 1st Grade
    • Hops, gallops, runs, and slides using a mature pattern

Unit 2: Human Body

  • Kindergarten
    • Identify selected body parts, skills, and movement concepts
  • 1st Grade
    • Identify major body parts (e.g. head, neck, arm, shoulders, elbow, legs, knee, hip, feet, back, fingers, toes)

Unit 3: Throwing/Catching

  • Kindergarten
    • Throws underhand with opposite foot forward
    • Catches a large ball tossed by a skilled thrower
  • 1st Grade
    • Throw a ball demonstrating an overhand technique, side orientation to the target, and stepping in opposition
    • Catches various sizes of balls self-tossed or tossed by a skilled thrower

Unit 4: Ball Handling 

  • Kindergarten
    • Dribbles a ball with one hand, attempting the second contact
  • 1st Grade
    • Dribbles continuously in self-space using the preferred hand

Unit 5: Nutrition (taught throughout the school year)

  • Kindergarten
    • Recognizes that food provides energy for physical activity and growth
  • 1st Grade
    • Differentiates between healthy and unhealthy foods

Unit 6: Volleying

  • Kindergarten
    • Volleys a light-weight object (balloon), sending it upward
  • 1st Grade
    • Volleys an object with an open palm, sending it upward

January - May

Unit 1: Jump Rope

  • Kindergarten
    • Executes a single jump with self-turned rope
  • 1st Grade
    • Jump Forward or backward consecutively using a self- turned rope

Unit 2: Foot Skills

  • Kindergarten
    • Taps a ball using the inside of the foot, sending it forward
    • Kicks a stationary ball from a stationary position demonstrating 2 of the 5 elements of a mature kicking pattern
  • 1st Grade
    • Approaches a stationary ball and kicks it forward, demonstrating 2 of the 5 critical elements of a mature pattern

Unit 3: Striking with Implement

  • Kindergarten
    • Strikes a lightweight object with a paddle short-handled racket
  • 1st Grade
    • Strikes a ball with a short-handled implement, sending it upward

Unit 4: Fitness

  • Kindergarten
    • Identifies active-play opportunities outside physical education class
  • 1st Grade
    • Discusses the benefits of being active and exercising and/ or playing
