2nd Grade Art

August - December

Strand 1: Create (Investigate, Plan, Make, Refine)

  • Discuss  in a small group the many ways to solve an art problem.
  • Create art about personal interests using a variety of materials and tools.
    • Design a building (architecture).
    • Create a still life.
    • Create a landscape. Identify foreground and background to create the illusion of space.
    • Create/identify a variety of lines.
    • Create/identify secondary colors.
    • Identify and use geometric shapes and forms.
    • Identify and create value.
  • Experiment with a variety of materials and tools.
  • Show proper and safe techniques for using and cleaning various art materials and work space.
  • Discuss and reflect with peers about choices made in creating artwork.
    • Explain why people have different responses to: subject matter, use of line, color, shape and texture, and use of media.

Strand 2: Present (Display, Express)

  • Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation.
    • Distinguish between different materials or artistic techniques for preparing artwork for presentation.
  • Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work.
    • Analyze how art exhibited inside and outside of schools (such as in museums, galleries, virtual spaces, and other venues) contributes to communities.

Strand 3: Respond (Perceive, Analyze, Interpret)

  • Perceive and analyze artistic work.
    • Consider and describe aesthetic qualities of  nature and architecture.
    • Categorize images based on expressive properties.
  • Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work.
    • Interpret art by identifying mood  described by subject matter and elements of art.
  • Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work.
    • Use art vocabulary to express preferences about artwork.

Strand 4:  Connect (Synthesize, Relate)

  • Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art.
    • Create works of art about events in home, school, or community life.
  • Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural, and historical context to deepen understanding.
    • Compare and contrast cultural uses of artwork from different times and places.

January - May

    • Identify and use real/actual texture.
    • Identify and create pattern.
  • Repurpose objects to make something new.

Strand 2: Present (Display, Express)

  • Select, analyze, and interpret artistic work for presentation.
    • Categorize artwork based on a theme or concept for an exhibit.
  • Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation.
    • Distinguish between different materials or artistic techniques for preparing artwork for presentation.
  • Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work.
    • Analyze how art exhibited inside and outside of schools (such as in museums, galleries, virtual spaces, and other venues) contributes to communities.
