2nd Grade Counseling

The following learning targets represent the major concepts addressed in the Guidance Curriculum.

August - December

Unit 1: Understanding Self as an Individual and as a Member of Diverse Local and Global Communities 

  • Express a variety of feelings. 
  • Identify personal roles in the community. 
  • Compare and contrast character traits needed for different situations. 

Unit 2: Applying personal safety skills and coping strategies

  • Practice the steps of problem solving and decision making for personal safety. 
  • Apply personal safety strategies as they relate to different situations. 
  • Recognize the effects of life changes or events related to self and others. 

Unit 3: Applying the skills of transitioning between educational levels  

  • Develop strategies to meet increased school expectations.  

Unit 4: Interacting with others in ways that respect individual and group differences 

  • Identify and demonstrate the interpersonal skills needed to make and keep a friend. 
  • Identify similarities and differences among families and their traditions. 
  • Identify the steps of problem solving and conflicts with others. 

January - May

Unit 5: Developing and monitoring individual career academic plan (ICAP) Goal, setting, education plan

  • Identify goals that lead to learner success. 

Unit 6: Applying career exploration and planning skills in the achievement of life career goals 

  • Identify new activities and interests to explore. 
  • Identify the academic skills necessary for the workers in the six (6) career paths. 
  • Explain the importance of jobs and workers in the community.  

Unit 7:  Knowing where and how to obtain information about the world of work and post-secondary training/education 

  • Identify and compare roles and responsibilities of workers within the community.  
  • Identify the skills needed by workers in the community. 

Unit 8:  Applying skills for career readiness and success

  • Identify personal, ethical, and work habit skills needed for workers in the community. 
  • Identify and apply the steps to obtain helper jobs within the classroom. 

Unit 9:  Applying personal safety skills and coping strategies

  • Practice the steps of problem solving and decision making for personal safety. 
  • Apply personal safety strategies as they relate to different situations. 
  • Recognize the effects of life changes or events related to self and others.
