3rd Grade Art

The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course.

August - December

Strand 1: Create (Investigate, Plan, Make, Refine)

  • Elaborate on an imaginative idea.
  • Apply knowledge of available resources, tools, and technologies to investigate personal ideas through the art making process.
    • Identify and use symmetry.
    • Create an artwork that demonstrates movement.
    • Create a variety of textures. (real/actual & simulated, 3D/2D).
    • Identify the subject matter: still life, landscape, portrait, non-objective.
    • Identify horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines.
    • Identify/use warm/cool colors.
  • Create personally satisfying artwork using a variety of artistic processes and materials.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the safe and proficient use of materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Individually or collaboratively construct representations, diagrams, or maps of places that are part of everyday life.
  • Add details into artwork to provide more information and enhance meaning.

Strand 2: Present (Display, Express)

  • Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work.
    • Identify and explain how and where different cultures record and illustrate stories and history of life through art.

Strand 3: Respond (Perceive, Analyze, Interpret)

  • Perceive and analyze artistic work.
    • Speculate about processes an artist uses to create a work of art.
    • Determine messages communicated by an image.

Strand 4:  Connect (Synthesize, Relate)

  • Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural, and historical context to deepen understanding.
    • Recognize that responses to art change depending on knowledge of the time and place in which it was made.

January - May

Strand 1: Create (Investigate, Plan, Make, Refine)

  • Elaborate on an imaginative idea.
  • Apply knowledge of available resources, tools, and technologies to investigate personal ideas through the art making process.
    • Expand on the concept of a landscape: cityscape, seascape, desertscape, etc.
    • Identify the subject matter: still life, landscape, portrait, non-objective.
    • Create functional art.
    • Identify sculpture in the round (form).
    • Identify and use middle ground, overlapping, and change of size to create the illusion of space.
  • Create personally satisfying artwork using a variety of artistic processes and materials.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the safe and proficient use of materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Individually or collaboratively construct representations, diagrams, or maps of places that are part of everyday life.
  • Add details into artwork to provide more information and enhance meaning.

Strand 2: Present (Display, Express)

  • Select, analyze, and interpret artistic work for presentation.
    • Investigate and discuss possibilities and limitations of spaces, including electronic, for exhibiting artwork.
  • Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation.
    • Identify exhibit space and prepare works of art, including artists’ statements, for presentation.
  • Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work.
    • Identify and explain how and where different cultures record and illustrate stories and history of life through art.

Strand 3: Respond (Perceive, Analyze, Interpret)

  • Perceive and analyze artistic work.
    • Determine messages communicated by an image.
  • Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work.
    • Interpret art by identifying mood  described by subject matter and elements of art.
  • Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work.
    • Evaluate an artwork based on given criteria.

Strand 4:  Connect (Synthesize, Relate)

  • Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art.
    • Develop a work of art based on observations of surroundings.
