4th Grade Art

The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course.

August - December

Strand 1: Create (Investigate, Plan, Make, Refine)

  • Brainstorm multiple approaches to a creative art or design problem.
    • Use modeling material to create organic forms. 
    • Expand on the concept of a landscape: cityscape, seascape, desertscape, etc.
  • Collaboratively set goals and create artwork that is meaningful and has purpose to the makers.
  • Explore and invent art making techniques and approaches.
    • Create a variety of values using drawing mediums. (value scale).
    • Create tints and shades.
    • Identify and use organic shapes and forms.
    • Identify and use placement and change in detail to create the illusion of space.
  • Use and care for art tools and materials safely and proficiently.
  • Revise artwork in progress based on constructive criticism with peers.

Strand 2: Present (Display, Express)

  • Select, analyze, and interpret artistic work for presentation.
    • Analyze how past, present, and emerging technologies have impacted the preservation and presentation of artwork.
  • Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work.
    • Compare and contrast purposes of art museums, art galleries, and other venues, as well as the types of personal experiences they provide.

Strand 3: Respond (Perceive, Analyze, Interpret)

  • Perceive and analyze artistic work.
    • Compare responses to a work of art before and after working in similar media.
  • Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work.
    • Apply one set of criteria to evaluate more than one work of art.

Strand 4:  Connect (Synthesize, Relate)

  • Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art.
    • Create works of art that reflect community cultural traditions.

January - May

Strand 1: Create (Investigate, Plan, Make, Refine)

  • Brainstorm multiple approaches to a creative art or design problem.
    • Identify and create an abstract portrait and still life. .
    • Identify and create a work of art using graphic design. 
  • Collaboratively set goals and create artwork that is meaningful and has purpose to the makers.
  • Explore and invent art making techniques and approaches.
    • Identify and use positive and negative space.
    • Identify and use radial symmetry. 
  • Use and care for art tools and materials safely and proficiently.
  • Document, describe, and represent regional constructed environments.
  • Revise artwork in progress based on constructive criticism with peers.

Strand 2: Present (Display, Express)

  • Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation.
    • Analyze  the various strategies for presenting and protecting art (e.g. location, setting, form, format).
  • Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work.
    • Compare and contrast purposes of art museums, art galleries, and other venues, as well as the types of personal experiences they provide.

Strand 3: Respond (Perceive, Analyze, Interpret)

  • Perceive and analyze artistic work.
    • Analyze a variety of symbolism in multiple artworks.
  • Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work.
    • Interpret art by referring to its context, subject matter, use of elements of art, and media.

Strand 4:  Connect (Synthesize, Relate)

  • Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural, and historical context to deepen understanding.
    • Through observation, infer information about time, place, and culture in which a work of art was created.
