5th Grade Art

August - December

Strand 1: Create (Investigate, Plan, Make, Refine)

  • Combine ideas to generate an innovative idea for art making.
    • Create facial features in correct proportion (portrait).
    • Identify and use intermediate and neutral colors.
    • Using modeling material, build a form using a variety of techniques. (coil, slab, pinch pot, etc.).
    • Identify and demonstrate diverse methods of artistic investigation to choose an approach for beginning a work of art. 
  • Experiment and develop skills in multiple art making techniques and approaches.
    • Identify and use symbolic shapes.
    • Identify and use simulated textures.
  • Demonstrate quality craftsmanship through care for and use of materials, tools, and equipment.
    • Identify, describe, and visually document places and/or objects of personal significance.
    • Create artist statements using art vocabulary to describe personal choices in art making.

Strand 2: Present (Display, Express)

  • Select, analyze, and interpret artistic work for presentation.
    • Define the roles and responsibilities of a curator, explaining the skills and knowledge needed in preserving, maintaining, and presenting objects, artifacts, and artwork.
  • Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation.
    • Develop a logical argument for safe and effective use of materials and techniques for preparing and presenting artwork.

Strand 3: Respond (Perceive, Analyze, Interpret)

  • Perceive and analyze artistic work.
    • Compare one’s own interpretation of a work of art with the interpretation of others.

Strand 4:  Connect (Synthesize, Relate)

  • Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art.
    • Apply formal and conceptual vocabularies of art and design to view surroundings in new ways through art making.

January - May

Strand 1: Create (Investigate, Plan, Make, Refine)

  • Combine ideas to generate an innovative idea for art making.
    • Identify and use asymmetry.
    • Identify and demonstrate diverse methods of artistic investigation to choose an approach for beginning a work of art. 
  • Experiment and develop skills in multiple art making techniques and approaches.
    • Create a still life from observation that shows the illusion of form.
    • Demonstrate converging lines to show the illusion of space. (one-point perspective).
  • Demonstrate quality craftsmanship through care for and use of materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Identify, describe, and visually document places and/or objects of personal significance.
  • Create artist statements using art vocabulary to describe personal choices in art making.

Strand 2: Present (Display, Express)

  • Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work.
    • Cite evidence about how an exhibition in a museum or other venue presents ideas and provides information about a  specific concept or topic.

Strand 3: Respond (Perceive, Analyze, Interpret)

  • Perceive and analyze artistic work.
    • Analyze artworks to decipher what culture it is associated with.
  • Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work.
    • Interpret art to identify ideas/mood conveyed by analyzing  context, subject matter, elements of art, and/or media.
  • Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work.
    • Evaluate works of art to determine style, genre, and/or media as well as historical and cultural context.

Strand 4:  Connect (Synthesize, Relate)

  • Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural, and historical context to deepen understanding.
    • Identify how art is used to inform or change beliefs, values, or behaviors of an individual or society.
