5th Grade Counseling

The following learning targets represent the major concepts addressed in the Guidance Curriculum.

August - December

Unit 1: Understanding Self as an Individual and as a Member of Diverse Local and Global Communities 

  • Demonstrate the personal characteristics to maintain a positive self-concept. 
  • Develop strategies to balance family, school, and community roles. 
  • Demonstrate personal characteristics of contributing members of the school community. 

Unit 2: Applying personal safety skills and coping strategies

  • Evaluate peer influence on problem-solving and decision making skills. 
  • Apply personal safety strategies as they relate to violence and harassment. 
  • Evaluate various coping skills for managing life changes or events. 

Unit 3: Applying the skills of transitioning between educational levels  

  • Develop an understanding of educational tasks and skills necessary to make a smooth transition to the middle school structure. 

Unit 4: Interacting with others in ways that respect individual and group differences 

  • Exhibit mutual respect and compromise in relationships. 
  • Demonstrate respect for individuals within diverse groups. 
  • Review and implement strategies to resolve problems and conflicts successfully.

January - May

Unit 5: Developing and monitoring individual career academic plan (ICAP) Goal, setting, education plan

  • Recognize the importance of an educational plan. 

Unit 6: Applying career exploration and planning skills in the achievement of life career goals 

  • Compare interests and strengths with those of workers in the global community. 
  • Describe occupational changes that have occurred over the time within the six (6) career paths. 
  • Describe the contributions of a variety of jobs in the community. 

Unit 7:  Knowing where and how to obtain information about the world of work and post-secondary training/education 

  • Compare and contrast the roles and responsibilities of workers within the six (6) career paths. 
  • Compare and contrast the training of educational requirements for a variety of careers. 

Unit 8:  Applying skills for career readiness and success

  • Apply personal, ethical, and work habit skills needed for success in any school or work environment. 
  • Identify the skills needed to develop a portfolio. 

Unit 9:  Applying personal safety skills and coping strategies
