5th Grade Music
The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course.
August - December
Unit 1: Connect with Music
- Students will learn how music relates to daily life including special events, books, artwork, science and/or other subjects.
- Students will learn how to make musical choices based on their personal knowledge, skills and interests.
Unit 2: Respond to Music
- Students will learn how to describe specific voices and instruments they hear using words such as soprano, alto, tenor, bass, and specific instrument names.
- Students will learn how to describe the purpose and background of spirituals and the blues.
January - May
Unit 3: Perform Music
- Students will learn how to read and/or perform standard rhythmic and melodic notation including pitches on the bass clef staff and a variety of notes and rests in compound meter.
- Students will use classroom instruments to play melodies and harmonies.
- Students can explain the difference between audience etiquette and performance behavior.
Unit 4: Create Music
- Students will learn to improvise and compose rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic ideas with a purpose in mind.
- Students will use adult and peer feedback to change and improve their compositions.
- Students will learn how to record their own music using written symbols or recording technology such as audio or video.
