Kindergarten Art

The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course.

August - December      

Strand 1: Create (Investigate, Plan, Make, Refine) 

  • Explore and use imagination with materials.
    • Introduce and Explore: line, shape, color
  • Discuss  art-making in a group or small table setting.
  • Use various media and techniques to experiment (paint, collage, etc.).
    • Create a picture of self or other person (portrait).
    • Create a picture showing outdoors (landscape).
  • Show proper and safe techniques with various art materials.
  • Explain the process of making art
    • Explain how stories can be told in pictures.

Strand 2: Present (Display, Express)

  • Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work.
    • Explain what an art museum is and distinguish how an art museum is different from other buildings.

Strand 3: Respond (Perceive, Analyze, Interpret)

  • Perceive and analyze artistic work.
    • Identify uses of art around you.
    • Describe what an image represents.

Strand 4:  Connect (Synthesize, Relate)

  • Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art.
    • Connect a life experience with a piece of art.

January - May

Strand 1: Create (Investigate, Plan, Make, Refine) 

  • Explore and use imagination with materials.
    • Review and Explore: line, shape, color, form
  • Discuss  art-making in a group or small table setting.
  • Use various media and techniques to experiment (paint, modeling, collage, etc).
    • Create a non-objective artwork.
  • Continue practicing proper and safe techniques with various art materials.
  • Create art that represents natural and constructed environments (architecture).
  • Create art that tells a story.

Strand 2: Present (Display, Express)

  • Select, analyze, and interpret artistic work for presentation.
    • Select art objects for personal portfolio and display, explaining why they were chosen.
  • Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation.
    • Explain the purpose of a portfolio.

Strand 3: Respond (Perceive, Analyze, Interpret)

  • Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work.
    • Interpret art by identifying subject matter and describing relevant details.
  • Explain the process of making art.
  • Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work.
    • Explain reasons for selecting a preferred artwork.

Strand 4:  Connect (Synthesize, Relate)

  • Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art.
    • Explain how stories can be told in pictures.
  • Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural, and historical context to deepen understanding.
    • Identify a purpose of an artwork.
