Kindergarten Counseling

The following learning targets represent the major concepts addressed in the Guidance Curriculum.

August - December

Unit 1: Understanding Self as an Individual and as a Member of Diverse Local and Global Communities 

  • Identify basic feelings. 
  • Identify personal roles in the family.
  • Identify character traits needed for different situations. 

Unit 2: Applying personal safety skills and coping strategies

  • Identify safe and healthy choices at home and school. 
  • Identify safe/unsafe situations. 
  • Identify different life changes or events.   

Unit 3: Applying the skills of transitioning between educational levels  

  • Identify how school expectations are different from home, day-care, or pre-school.

Unit 4: Interacting with others in ways that respect individual and group differences 

  • Demonstrate how to be a friend. 
  • Identify similarities and differences between self and others. 
  • Identify feelings of others. 

January - May

Unit 5: Developing and monitoring individual career academic plan (ICAP) Goal, setting, education plan

  • Identify the skills needed to be a successful learner.  

Unit 6: Applying career exploration and planning skills in the achievement of life career goals 

  • Identify likes and dislikes at home and at school.  
  • Identify workers in the school and in families related to the six (6) career paths. 
  • Recognize that all work is important. 

Unit 7:  Knowing where and how to obtain information about the world of work and post-secondary training/education 

  • Identify roles and responsibilities of family members in the world of work. 
  • Identify the skills family members use in their work.  

Unit 8:  Applying skills for career readiness and success

  • Identify personal and ethical skills needed to work cooperatively with others in a group at school. 
  • Identify helper jobs that are available in the classroom.  

Unit 9:  Applying personal safety skills and coping strategies

  • Identify safe and healthy choices at home and school. 
  • Identify safe/unsafe situations
  • Identify different life changes or events.
