The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course.


Semester 1

Unit 1

  • Combine background knowledge with details from the text to draw conclusions and make inferences about what the text does not explicitly state
  • Use semicolons in my writing to enhance my overall writing skills
  • Identify two to three thematic ideas of a passage
  • Expand a thematic idea into a theme
  • Support my theme with textual evidence
  • Determine the connotative and denotative meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text

Unit 2

  • Analyze how an author uses rhetorical devices to advance point of view and purpose in a text
  • Explain how the main idea develops in the text and explain the significance
  • Identify faulty logic in an argument
  • Evaluate the validity of an argument
  • Understand parallelism within Standard English usage, specifically with words, phrases, and sentences
  • Understand the different rhetorical appeals and how authors use them to persuade their audiences

Semester 2

Unit 3

  • Explain how the main ideas develop in the text and explain their significance
  • Develop clear body paragraphs
  • Maintain a formal tone in an academic paper
  • Recognize and correct formal tone errors
  • Blend elements of narrative, expository, and argumentative writing into one cohesive piece
  • Understand compound sentence structure and be able to integrate it into my own writing
  • Understand how to effectively integrate textual evidence into my writing
  • Understand how to correctly cite my resources to avoid plagiarism

Unit 4

  • Understand the purpose of thesis statements and be able to craft my own for my literary analysis
  • Determine the meaning of figurative language as it is used in a text
  • Understand subject-verb agreement by being able to identify subjects and verbs in sentences
  • Draw conclusions and infer what the text says using my own experiences and textual evidence
  • Differentiate between major and minor themes of a text
  • Analyze the tools used to develop a major theme of a text
