ENGLISH IV
The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course.
Semester 1
Unit 1
- Analyze the importance of word choice, syntax, and structure in a text and how they contribute to the overall meaning of a text
- Evaluate how an author’s structural decisions in a text impact the text’s meaning and aesthetic, especially in professional documents
- Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information into a unique product (writing, drawing, advocating)
- Craft an argument which includes persuasive appeals, rhetorical devices and advanced diction
- Differentiate between facts and opinions and recognize them in persuasive writing
- Refine and edit documents to reflect professionalism
Unit 2
- Work collaboratively to follow a design-thinking process from start to finish
- Create a portfolio that reflects learning and educational experiences
- Use specific word and structure choices to reflect purpose in a piece of a writing or presentation
- Refine and edit documents to reflect professionalism
- Present information to the class in a clear and professional manner
- Follow a writing process to produce a clear, organized, and coherent piece of writing
- Revise a piece of writing while considering the purpose and audience
Semester 2
Unit 3
- Use textual evidence to support an inference, conclusion, or analysis of a text
- Understand how the context of a time period can affect the writing and creating that happens during that time period
- Compare and contrast American culture to other cultures using evidence from multiple texts and personal experience
- Connect themes and ideas in a text to the real world and personal experiences
- Respond to diverse perspectives thoughtfully and support responses with evidence, as well as synthesize (combine) ideas from multiple texts to draw a larger conclusion
- Present information to the class in a clear and professional manner

Unit 4
- Determine the meaning of words/phrases, including figurative and connotative meanings to deepen understanding of a text
- Use appropriate text, determine two or more themes and analyze their development throughout the text
- Relate themes to human nature and the world and provide an objective and concise summary of the text
- Respond to diverse perspectives thoughtfully and support responses with evidence, as well as synthesize (combine) ideas from multiple texts to draw a larger conclusion
- Follow a writing process to produce a clear, organized, and coherent piece of writing
- Explain and analyze the development of multiple main ideas in a text and relate them to human nature and the world
