Essential Math I
The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course.
Unit 1
Language of Algebra
U1.1 I can rewrite words, pictures and algebraic expressions or equations in another form.
U1.2 I can use diagrams and algebraic notations to solve equations.
- Use notation to track the transformations of an unknown number
- Translate among verbal, pictorial, & symbolic notations
- Think logically about equivalence
- Work from known information to determine missing or unknown information
- Communicate mathematical relationships & patterns through verbal, pictorial, & algebraic representations
Unit 2
Geography of the Number Line
U2.1 Compare rational numbers.
U2.2 Solve linear equations using integers.
U2.3 Look for and make use of structure through number sense with integers.
- Order & place positive & negative numbers on the number line
- Make & use observations about sums & differences on the number line
- Use the number line to determine the distance between two numbers
- Represent inequalities on the number line
- Reason abstractly about number placement & operations using variables.
- Translate verbal & symbolic puzzle clues
Unit 3
Micro-Geography of the Number Line
U3.1. Comparing rational numbers(decimals and fractions).
U3.2. Look for and make use of structure using numbers sense with fractions and decimals.
- Order & place positive & negative numbers (decimals & fractions) on the number line
- Connect the structure of decimals to that of integers by zooming in on the number line by factors of 10.
- Connect fractions to integers both through zooming in on the number line & through division
- Evaluate & estimate sums & differences of decimals & fractions
- Find distances between numbers with fractions & decimals by using the number line in the same way it was used with integers
- Identify numbers between numbers using decimals & fractions
