Advanced Competitive Drama 

The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course. 

Semester 1 

Introduction to Communication 

  • Describe the process of communication through models and examples
  • Recall the elements of verbal and nonverbal communication 
  • Name the logistics and practices that take place in Speech and Debate

Script Selection 

  • Review scripts through a library of resources provided by the classroom 
  • Interpret characters, lines, ideas, and more through the selected text 

Cutting a Script 

  • Breakdown what needs to be kept within a storyline and plot of the script selected
  • Classify the 5 elements of plot structure in the story
  • Layout the story to determine a script 

Characterization 

  • Interpret characters' personalities, traits, and physicalities 
  • Create the character by reading the lines they perform
  • Develop a voice, stance, and background for each character in a script 

Fall Performance 

  • Critique fellow performers and offer suggestions to improve their piece 
  • Conclude the semester with your performance and set goals for next semester 

Semester 2 

District Competition 

  • Assemble the final pieces of performance into a piece 
  • Create a professional event for larger competition
  • Perform and practice the piece

Script Preparation 

  • Determine material to begin the creative process 
  • Express the characters and story behind the piece 
  • Outline the scenes by interpreting the action

Spring Performance 

  • Critique fellow performers and offer suggestions to improve their piece
  • Conclude the semester with your performance and set goals for next semester
