Introduction to Theatre Design and Production 

The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course. 

Semester Class 

Theatre Communication and Teamwork 

  • Understand effective communication practices in Theatrical Spaces. ● Discuss different roles in productive teams. 
  • Implement best practices of theatrical designers and producers. 

Basics of Stage 

  • Identify the types of stages 
  • Analyze the purposes, strengths, and weaknesses of different styles of staging 
  • Construct and Model a stage 

Elements of Design 

  • Analyze exemplar productions for design elements 
  • Compare and contrast differences in design elements and the implementation 

Foundations of Set/Costume/Lights/Sound/Prop Design 

  • Analyze best practices for each design element. 
  • Document process of production and design throughout each design element. 

Design Team in Practice 

  • Plan, as a team, a full scale production from the design team’s perspective 
  • Synthesize individual design elements into a coherent vision for unrealized production 
  • Present renderings/model of design elements for an unrealized production. 

Reflection 

  • Critique designs of various productions, both professional and personal. 
  • Respond to peers’ design choices 
  • Reflect upon personal design choices and set goals for future designs
