The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course.
Semester 1
Introduction to Communication
- Describe the process of communication through models and examples
- Recall the elements of verbal and nonverbal communication
- Name the logistics and practices that take place in Speech and Debate
Case Construction
- Define vocabulary of case writing
- Attain researched evidence to place in the designated case format
- Correlate ideas of evidence, impact statements, and arguments to create a persuasive doctrine
Rebuttal Strategies
- Discuss arguments and how they contradict each other
- Differentiate evidence to ensure the quality of refutation
- Assess evidence collected and prepare questions for future debate
Research
- Cite evidence and research in the proper format for debating
- Clarify language of peer reviewed journals, articles, and texts to add further understanding
- Analyze arguments through finding sources to provide as evidence
Presentation (Mock Debate)
- Critique fellow debaters and offer suggestions to improve their piece
- Conclude the semester with your performance and set goals for next semester
- Facilitate debating over the topics researched, cases created, and rebuttal strategies
Semester 2
District Competition
- Assemble the final pieces of performance into a piece
- Create a professional event for larger competition
- Perform and practice the piece
Congressional Debate
- Recall the duties and responsibilities of representatives in Congress
- Research, write, and construct speeches for the assigned topics
- Model the actions of Congress to recite speeches and discuss the topics
Public Address
- Prepare and perform speeches to ensure the further understanding of districts and congressional debate
- Conclude the semester with your performance and set goals for next semester
