Prerequisite: Introduction to Business and Management

This course is designed to meet the needs of students interested in studying accounting or business in college, students interested in learning about keeping the financial records for their own businesses in the future, and students interested in general office work. The course provides training in bookkeeping principles, payroll, and financial reports. Students will get practical experience in accounting through the use of spreadsheets and computer-based accounting programs.

Prerequisite: Accounting I

This course is a continuation of the first year course with an emphasis on cost, managerial, and corporate accounting.
There will be additional study in automated accounting and computer-based spreadsheet applications. After completing
this course, students planning to major in accounting or business in college will be better prepared for university-level
accounting and students seeking employment immediately after high school will be better qualified for entry-level
accounting positions.

Advanced Digital Media Production (1 credit PAR, Gr. 11-12) Course Number: 8151

Prerequisite: Digital Media Production

This advanced course will allow students to further their skills in all areas of media and convergence media through the
creation of products for student programs (i.e. newspaper, yearbook, broadcasting, online, social). Students will continue
to build and update their online portfolio and social media presence.

Advanced Fashion (0.5 credit PAR, Gr. 9-12) Course Number: 6104

Prerequisite: Introduction to Fashion

Are you ready to enhance your knowledge in the area of fashion merchandising, construction and design production? You will discover a variety of visual merchandising techniques, research development of designers and career options, clothing history and textiles for construction. Advanced Interior Design (1 credit PAR, Gr. 11-12) Course Number: 6106

This second level course will provide students the opportunity to enhance their knowledge in the areas of interior design. Students will discover a variety of visual techniques, research development of designers and career options, and textiles for construction. Advanced Metals (2 credits PAR, Gr. 10-12) Course Number: 8133

Prerequisite: General Metals

This advanced course in metalworking is designed to provide students with a more in-depth understanding of tools, equipment, materials, processes, maintenance, and equipment setup in the metalworking industry. Safety glasses are required.

Advanced Woods (1 credit PAR, Gr. 10-12) Course Number: 8118

Prerequisite: Foundations of Wood 

This advanced course will reinforce students’ skills and knowledge related to carpentry and cabinetmaking. Topics
covered in the course include: care and safe usage of equipment and machines; materials; fasteners; hand and power
tools; and fabrication based on blueprints. This course gives students additional skills and knowledge typically required
for apprentice carpenters.

Aerospace Engineering (1 credit PAR, Gr. 10-12, weighted) Course Number: 8116

Prerequisite: Introduction to Engineering Design

This course propels students’ learning in the fundamentals of atmospheric and space flight. As they explore the physics
of flight, students bring the concepts to life by designing an airfoil, propulsion system, and rockets. They learn basic
orbital mechanics using industry-standard software. Students also explore robot systems through projects such as
remotely operated vehicles.

Agriculture I (1 Credit, PAR, Gr. 9-12) Course Number: 1010

This course is an introductory course that will teach agribusiness, plant and animal science, leadership skills, food processing systems and the development and management of power, structural and technical ag systems.

Allied Health – 4 credits (3 credits PAR and 1 credit MTH or SCI, Gr. 11-12) Course Number: 8613

Prerequisite: Minimum 2.5 GPA; 90% attendance; a grade of C or better in Algebra I and a grade of C or better in Biology or Chemistry

This program at Summit Technology Academy is for students interested in learning more about Allied Health careers or who would like to enter college healthcare programs after graduation. Students will be engaged in hands-on skills, lab work, and projects related to dental assisting; health information technology; occupational therapy/occupational therapy assistant; paramedic/EMT; physical therapy/physical therapy assistant; radiologic technology and respiratory care, surgical technology, nursing, polysomnography, chiropractic, athletic training, laboratory, pharmacy, and other allied health careers. This program allows internship and shadowing opportunities in allied health career fields. In addition, students will have opportunities to gain industry credentials such as Basic Lifesaver CPR training and HIPAA credentials. Students will have to provide transportation periodically in order to accommodate outside lab experiences and internships.

Animal Health Science (4 Credit, PAR Gr. 11-12) Course Number: 4218

Students will work on deepening their knowledge and skill development in the Animal Health Science industry during the second year. Students must also desire to be out in industry on an internship setting totaling at least 8 hours per week and take on the role of mentors to the first year students. Students engaging in second year programming should be prepared to complete and present an advanced, year-long passion project. Students must provide their own transportation.

Architectural Drafting (1 credit PAR, Gr. 10-12) Course Number: 8105

This course in drafting deals with the principals involved in site selection, room planning, exterior styling, designing structural elements of house dwellings, and computer graphics as it relates to architectural drawing. Students will be introduced to various construction methods, building materials, and terminology used in the architectural fields. Preparation of a complete set of plans and specifications for a house of traditional and/or contemporary design will be required in a CADD environment.

Automotive Collision Repair I – 4 credits (3 credits PAR and 1 credit SCI, Gr. 11-12) Course Number: 8503

Prerequisite: Advanced Metals

This course is the first year of a two-year program at Herndon Career Center designed to prepare students for entry-level jobs repairing and refinishing collision damaged vehicles. Employment opportunities exist in automotive dealerships, independent repair shops, specialty shops or fleet operations. Emphasis is placed on classroom instruction during the first year of the program while students work toward industry-recognized certifications from the Inter-Industry on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR), Pittsburg Paint and Glass (PPG), and Audatex Estimating System (ADP). Lab experiences develop personal pride and craftsmanship using hand tools, power tools, welding and refinishing equipment.

Automotive Technology II – 4 credits (3 credits PAR and 1 credit SCI, Gr. 12) Course Number: 8524

Prerequisite: Automotive Technology I

This is the second year of a two-year program at Herndon Career Center intended to prepare students for entry-level employment as technicians in the maintenance and repair of passenger cars and light trucks. Approximately 75% of the time will be spent repairing customer-owned vehicles with special emphasis in the use of test equipment for the purpose of diagnosing engine malfunction, steering-suspension and alignment adjustment, as well as air-conditioning repair. Classroom instruction will involve the introduction of technical information pertaining to the power plant, powertrain, automotive electronics, transmissions, and automotive air conditioning.

Automotive Technology I – 4 credits (3 credits PAR and 1 credit SCI, Gr. 11-12) Course Number: 8523

Prerequisite: Advanced Metals

This course is the first year of a two-year program at Herndon Career Center intended to prepare students for entry-level jobs as technicians in maintenance and repair of passenger cars and light trucks. Students will have both classroom instruction and laboratory experiences with approximately 60% of the time devoted to classroom instruction. Proficiency in use of automotive service tools and instruction in the more advanced scientific and mechanical principles on the automobile will be an important part of the training experience.

Prerequisite: Automotive Technology I

This course, offered through the Blue Springs School District, is a year-long program that includes private pilot ground school, aeronautics, remotely piloted aircraft basics/drones, and principles of helicopter flight. Fees are associated with this program for materials.

Baking Essentials (1 credit PAR, Gr. 11-12) Course Number: 5117

Prerequisite: Culinary Essentials

This course will broaden students’ culinary outlook. This course includes the science of baking, pastry principles, food safety, and food preparation. Students will examine the fundamental baking concepts including sanitation, ingredient identification, ingredient usage, weights and measures, inventory and product ordering as it pertains to a professional pastry shop. Students will be operating a working bake shop.

Behavioral Health (4 credits PAR, Gr. 11-12) Course Number: 8635

Prerequisite: Minimum 2.5 GPA; 90% attendance; a grade of C or better in Psychology and Sociology

Behavioral Health as a program would be designed to support students interested in working as a community health advocate particularly those students interested in pursuing careers in the behavioral health field. Entry level fields could include roles such as a direct service professional, behavioral health technician, or registered behavior technician. This course would also prepare students to enter a post-secondary institution to pursue certification as a community health advocate (certification program). More broadly, this program will assist students in pursuing a career in the behavioral health sciences in studying psychology or sociology with the following potential career outcomes: community support specialist, board certified behavior analyst, licensed professional counselor, social worker, psychiatrist, etc. Below would be a list of general topics and broad learning objectives to facilitate student development and career awareness in the field of behavioral health sciences.

CTSO: Students enrolled in Behavioral Health would participate in Future Health Professionals (HOSA). In 2021-2022, recognizing the increased demand for behavioral health occupations, HOSA added a Behavioral Health competition which focuses on the Discovering Psychology: The Science of the Mind (4th ed.). Students would also be able to participate in leadership and teamwork categories. This recommended book could also potentially be used for the general psychology educational component, and potentially for dual or articulated credit.

Business Law (0.5 credit PAR, Gr. 10-12) Course Number: 5117

This course will teach students how the laws that govern business are relevant to their everyday lives. Specific areas include laws for minors, families, consumers, contracts, bankruptcy, repossessions, employment contracts, discrimination, landlords, and cyber laws. This course will also discuss entrepreneurship law, family law, and criminal law. Additionally this course combines practical opportunities as well as expertise of a business organization. Students will work with the local community in order to apply practical applications of economics. Entrepreneurial possibilities are available within this course. Students will learn to make economical decisions, keep business records and documents, as well as market products targeting local economical issues and business careers.

Child Development (0.5 credit PAR, Gr. 9-12) Course Number: 6109

Prerequisite: Introduction to Education or Introduction to Public Service 

This course provides advanced study in child development and guidance, including the physical, social, and intellectual development of children. Actual experience in supervising children provides the opportunity to improve parenting skills, explore careers related to child development, and identify general employment skills. This course is a requirement for Early Child Development Capstone.

Cisco CCNA (4 credits PAR, Gr. 12, weighted) College Credit Available, Course Number: 8177

Prerequisite: Information Technology Essentials or Network Security

This course provides a comprehensive, theoretical, and practical approach to learning the technologies and protocols
needed to design, implement, and secure enterprise and wide area networks. Students completing CCNA will be able to
configure and troubleshoot inter-VLAN routing, VLANs, WLANs as well as wide area networking technologies. In this
course, students will develop comprehensive networking concepts and applied skills, from network applications to the
protocols and services provided to those applications while progressing from basic networking to more complex
enterprise and theoretical networking models in preparation for the Cisco Certified Network Associate industry
certification.

Civil Engineering and Architecture (1 credit PAR, Gr. 10-12, weighted) Course Number: 8110

Prerequisite: Introduction to Engineering Design

The major focus of this course is completing long-term projects that involve the development of property sites. As
students learn about various aspects of civil engineering and architecture, they apply what they learn to the design and
development of a property. The course provides teachers and students freedom to develop the property as a simulation
or to students to model the experiences that civil engineers and architects face. Students work in teams, exploring hands
on activities and projects to learn the characteristics of civil engineering and architecture. In addition, students use 3-D
design software to help them design solutions to solve major course projects. Students learn about documenting their project, solving problems, and communicating their solutions to their peers and members of the professional community
of civil engineering and architecture.

This course at Metropolitan Community College – Business and Technology Campus is designed to introduce the student to the manufacturing environment, requirements, and career opportunities of major technologies in the industry. The course will cover the history, setting of manufacturing and industry, safety, drawing, measurement and layout, and an introduction to basic shop equipment.

This course at Metropolitan Community College – Business and Technology Campus covers the safe use of basic shop power equipment and hand tools. Students will learn precision measurement methods. Computer Integrated Manufacturing (1 credit PAR, Gr. 10-12, weighted) Course Number: 8119

Manufactured items are part of everyday life, yet most students have not been introduced to the high-tech, innovative nature of modern manufacturing. This course illuminates the opportunities related to understanding manufacturing. At the same time, it teaches students about manufacturing processes, product design, robotics, and automation. Students can earn a virtual manufacturing badge recognized by the National Manufacturing Badge System.

Computer Science Applications (1 credit PAR, Gr. 11-12, weighted) Course Number: 8174

Prerequisite: Computer Science Principles

This course focuses on further developing computational-thinking skills through the medium of AndroidTM App
development for mobile platforms. The course utilizes industry-standard tools such as Android Studio, JavaTM
programming language, XML, and device emulators. Students collaborate to create original solutions to problems of their
own choosing by designing and implementing user interfaces and Web-based databases. This course aligns with the AP
CSA course.

Computer Science Essentials (1 credit PAR, Gr. 9-12, weighted) Course Number: 8182

Designed to be the first computer science course for students who have never programmed before, this course is an optional starting point for the PLTW Computer Science program. Students will work in teams to create apps for mobile devices using MIT App Inventor®. They explore the impact of computing in society and build skills in digital citizenship and cybersecurity. Beyond learning the fundamentals of programming, students build computational-thinking skills by applying computer science to collaboration tools, modeling and simulation, and data analysis. In addition, students transfer the understanding of programming gained in App Inventor to text-based programming in Python® and apply their knowledge to create algorithms for games of chance and strategy.

Prerequisite: Computer Science Essentials

Using Python® as a primary tool and incorporating multiple platforms and languages for computation, this course aims
to develop computational thinking, generate excitement about career paths that utilize computing, and introduce
professional tools that foster creativity and collaboration. This course will help students develop programming expertise
and explore the workings of the Internet. Projects and problems include app development, visualization of data,
cybersecurity, and simulation.

Construction Trades I (4 credits PAR, Gr. 11-12) Course Number: 8250

Prerequisite: Advanced Woods

This half-day course provides students the opportunity to extend their skills and knowledge related to residential and
commercial carpentry. Topics covered in the course include: installation and trim of windows and doors; installation and repair of gypsum wallboard; advanced site layout; exterior and interior finish work; and thermal and moisture protection.
This course gives students a substantial skill and knowledge foundation typically required for apprentice carpenters.

Cosmetology – 8 credits (7 credits PAR and 1 credit ENG, Gr. 12) Course Number: 8528

The cosmetology program at Herndon Career Center prepares students for the Missouri State Board of Licensing
examination and to become employed as a cosmetologist. This full-day unit studies the properties of hair and scalp, hair
cutting techniques, chemical applications, skincare and make up, nail care, personal hygiene, business and professional
ethics, safety, sterilization and sanitation methods, salesmanship and communication skills, and state laws and rules.

Culinary Essentials (1 credit PAR, Gr. 10-12) Course Number: 6200

Prerequisite: Introduction to Hospitality and Culinary

This course will provide a foundation in the science of keeping food safe, exploring the influence of social and cultural food practices, applying scientific and mathematical principles to food preparation and meal planning. Through practical laboratory experiences, cooperative learning and organizational skills, as well as time management, students will become familiar with kitchen tools, equipment, terminology, recipes, and communication skills needed for successful food service careers.

Design Capstone (1-2 credits PAR, Gr. 12) Course Number: 6120

Prerequisite: Advanced Interior Design

This capstone is a project that allows students to learn about themselves by moving an idea or dream toward a topic of
interest, specialization, community need, or career choice. As part of this course, all students must complete a capstone
experience which may include, but is not limited to: senior project, virtual enterprise, internship, externship, work-based
learning, service learning, community service, etc. This course can be taken as either one or two credits, depending on the chosen project. In the spring semester of the student’s junior year, the student will develop a capstone proposal for approval.

Digital Electronics (1 credit PAR, Gr. 10-12, weighted) Course Number: 8106

Prerequisite: Introduction to Engineering Design

This course is designed so that students gain skills in basic electronics, logical thinking, problem solving, and electronic
troubleshooting. Students will seek answers to questions such as how do robots make decisions, how does a calculator
work, and what does an electrical engineer do? By gaining a basic understanding of digital electronics in high school, a
student gains a head start on an engineering career - no matter what field. Digital Electronics is a course in applied logic
that encompasses the application of electronic circuits and devices. Computer simulation software is used to design and
test digital circuitry prior to the actual construction of circuits and devices.
