Advanced Digital Media Production 

 

This full year course is a production based course. Everyone in this course is on the school media staff for the individual school. The course is co-curricular and will require hours beyond normal instruction. Every student will fill a role on staff ranging from reporters to photographers to editors to broadcasters. Students will have assignments that need to be finished by deadlines and meet requirements that have been discussed based on each individual assignment. Students will learn how to operate as a member of a team under tight, deadline pressure. They will learn the ability to problem solve and find solutions to issues as they strive to meet their deadlines. They will produce content for a variety of platforms and in doing so learn presentation skills unique to each platform. They will hone valuable soft skills such as creativity, collaboration, and time management.

Unit 1:  Organization and Set-up 

  • Decide staff roles 
  • Yearbook staff builds a ladder and comes up with theme for the book along with design 
  • Broadcast staff decides what type of content will be produced throughout the year (build a production schedule)
  • Online newspaper assigns beats and comes up with a coverage strategy
  • Live Broadcast decides what games we will broadcast over the course of the year and what the adjustment plans will be in case some games become more important due to the results of the season.
  • Editorial Board sets overall coverage map for the year

 

Unit 2: First Half of First Semester Production 

  • Yearbook staff begins creating summer spreads and early year spreads.
  • Broadcast staff builds interview skills and comfort level on camera with interview packages.
  • Online newspaper starts covering early year events.
  • Live Broadcast starts building graphics for the coverage and starts working on pregame show and postgame show.
  • Editors continue to host weekly story meetings and help guide their staff to completion of stories. They also participate in the bi-weekly editorial meeting.

Unit 3: Second Half of First Semester Production

  • Yearbook completes first an second deadlines in November and December which amounts to 110 pages total.
  • Broadcast produces weekly shows…each student will fulfill a role in one of our weekly shows. Those roles will rotate throughout the semester so that everyone experiences every role.
  • Online newspaper covers key events such as Homecoming, rivalry sporting events, and big school fundraisers. Those special events coverage stories are in addition to regular reporting each week.
  • Live broadcast will produce and perform live broadcasts for big sporting events at the school (rivalry games, homecoming games, key match-ups, etc.). They will follow the live broadcast schedule set at the start of the year.
  • Editors continue to host weekly story meetings and help guide their staff to completion of stories. They also participate in the bi-weekly editorial meeting.

 

Unit 4: First Half of Second Semester Production

  • Yearbook completes deadlines three and four which is a total of 108 more pages.
  • Broadcast produces weekly shows…each student will fulfill a role in one of our weekly shows. Those roles will rotate throughout the semester so that everyone experiences every role.
  • Online newspaper covers key events such as Courtwarming, rivalry sporting events, and big school fundraisers. Those special events coverage stories are in addition to regular reporting each week.
  • Live broadcast will produce and perform live broadcasts for big sporting events at the school (rivalry games, homecoming games, key match-ups, etc.). They will follow the live broadcast schedule set at the start of the year.
  • Editors continue to host weekly story meetings and help guide their staff to completion of stories. They also participate in the bi-weekly editorial meeting.

 

Unit 5: Second Half of Second Semester Production

  • Yearbook completes the final deadline for the book and completes the supplement. They also deliver the final book.
  • Broadcast produces weekly shows…each student will fulfill a role in one of our weekly shows. Those roles will rotate throughout the semester so that everyone experiences every role. They also work on the senior video and year end coverage.
  • Online newspaper covers key events and also puts together special year end coverage.
  • Live broadcast will produce and perform live broadcasts for big sporting events at the school (rivalry games, homecoming games, key match-ups, etc.). They will follow the live broadcast schedule set at the start of the year.
  • Editors continue to host weekly story meetings and help guide their staff to completion of stories. They also participate in the bi-weekly editorial meeting.
