Interior Design
The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course.
Semester 1
Unit 1: Intro to Interior Design
- Analyze career paths within the housing, interior design, and furnishing industries.
Unit 2: History of Housing
- Analyze design and development of architecture, interiors, and furnishings through the ages.
- Describe features of furnishing that are characteristic of various historical periods.
- Illustrate the development of architectural styles throughout history.
Unit 3: Color
- Evaluate the use of color in the design of commercial, residential, and housing interiors.
- Analyze the psychological impact that color has on design choices.
Unit 4: Elements and Principles of Design
- Evaluate the use of elements and principles of design in commercial, residential, and housing interiors.
- Analyze the psychological impact the principles and elements of design have on the individual.
- Analyze the principles and elements of design on aesthetics and function.
- Critique design plans to address clients’ needs and resources.
- Justify design solutions relative to client needs, including diversity and cultural needs, and the design process.
Unit 5: Floor Plans
- Evaluate floor plans with efficiency and safety in areas including but not limited to zones, traffic patterns, storage, electrical, plumbing, ventilation, and thermal systems.
- Arrange furniture placement with reference to principles of design, traffic flow, activity, and existing architectural features.
- Demonstrate graphic communication skills.
