The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course.
Semester 1
Unit 1: Careers in Law
- Describe the job duties of various careers in law.
- Place the person in the courtroom and their connection to other workers.
- Present a detailed research of one career in law besides the lawyer.
Unit 2: US Court Systems
- Order the types of courts in levels of importance.
- Examine the state court system’s relationship to the federal court system.
- Describe the appellate court system.
Unit 3: Trial Process
- List the steps in the trial process.
- Prepare an example of each step in the process.
- Explain the purpose of each step in the trial process.
Unit 4: Criminal Law
- Study a mock trial case to perform each step in the criminal trial process.
- Identify relevant procedures for a criminal trial process.
- Compare and contrast prosecutorial and defense burdens in the criminal trial process.
Unit 5: Civil Law
- Study a mock trial case to perform each step in the civil trial process.
- Compare and contrast the civil trial process to the criminal trial process.
- Compare and contrast plaintiff and defense burdens in the civil trial process.
Unit 6: Juvenile Justice
- Draw distinctions between Juvenile Justice systems and other court systems.
- Identify relevant laws and rationales related to public education.
