8th Grade Math

The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course.

Semester 1

Unit A: Real Numbers

  • Identify whether a number is rational or irrational, and approximate on the number line.
  • Generate equivalent representations of rational numbers, including converting decimals / repeating fractions.
  • Solve and evaluate perfect and non-perfect square and cubed roots of positive numbers.

Unit B: Transformational Geometry

  • Describe the effect of transformations of two-dimensional figures using coordinates.
  • Verify the properties of similarity or congruence for rotations, reflections, translations, and dilations.
  • Describe a sequence of two transformations between two figures.

Unit C: Linear Equations, Inequalities, and Angle Relationships

  • Solve multi-step linear equations with variables on one side.
  • Solve multi-step linear equations with variables on both sides.
  • Solve multi-step linear equations to determine the number of solutions.
  • Solve and graph inequalities with variables on one side.
  • Find the unknown interior and/or exterior angles of a triangle.
  • Use angle relationships to identify and/or find an unknown angle measure when parallel lines are cut by a transversal.

Unit D: Pythagorean Theorem and Angle Relationships

  • Use the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse to solve problems.
  • Find the unknown side length of two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes and use it to solve problems.
  • Find the distance on the coordinate plane.

Unit E: Linear Relationships and Functions

  • Find, interpret, and compare slope as unit rate given different forms: graph, table, and equation.
  • Graph proportional relationships and linear relationships.
  • Determine and describe the functional relationship between two quantities (including linear / non-linear, increasing / decreasing).
  • Interpret and compare slope-intercept form given different forms: graph, table, and equation.

Semester 2

Unit F: Systems of Linear Equations

  • Graph systems of linear equations and interpret the solutions.
  • Classify through inspection (one solution, no solution, many solutions) and explain (what the solution means) the solution(s) to a system of equations.
  • Solve a system of equations algebraically (substitution, not elimination).

Unit G: Statistics and Probability

  • Construct and interpret a scatter plot, including its trend line (linear model) and evaluate and identify the line of best fit.
  • Construct and interpret a two-way table summarizing data on two categorical variables.
  • Use relative frequencies to describe the association between the two variables.

Unit H: Exponents and Scientific Notation

  • Apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent expressions.
  • Express very large and very small quantities in scientific notation and approximate how many times larger one is than the other.
  • Perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation.

Unit I: Volume and Surface Area

  • Find the surface area of pyramids and use it to solve problems.
  • Find the volume of pyramids, cones, and spheres, and use it to solve problems.
