The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course.

Semester 1

Unit 1: Introduction to Fundamentals of Perform, Create, Connect, Respond

  • Review and practice rhythmic skills
  • Learn fundamentals of singing
  • Practice melodic reading
  • Develop listening and evaluation skills

Unit 2: Connect and Respond – Listening and Evaluation

  • Identify and discuss elements of music
  • Write or draw interpretations of music
  • Identify the purpose of music

Unit 3: Perform and Create – Composition and Performance

  • Perform songs as an ensemble for an audience
  • Read melodies and scale degrees
  • Demonstrate proper singing techniques

Semester 2

Unit 4: Connect and Respond – Cultural Response to Music

  • Identify styles of performing musical arts (musical, opera, ballet, symphony, band, rock, jazz, etc.)
  • Identify elements that define various musical styles
  • Compare and contrast different performing arts styles
  • Understand plot inspirations throughout history (fables, myths, legends, stories, religious themes)

Unit 5: Connect and Respond – College and Career Readiness

  • Explore careers within the music industry
  • Identify education or experience requirements for music careers
  • Research and present selected music careers

Unit 6: Perform and Create – Composition and Performance

  • Perform songs as an ensemble for an audience
