The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course.

Semester 1

Unit 1: Introduction to Orchestra

  • Review rhythms and notes on the staff
  • Learn instrument fundamentals
  • Identify parts of the instrument
  • Learn care and maintenance
  • Understand posture and instrument balance
  • Develop listening and evaluation skills
  • Understand ensemble expectations

Unit 2: Winter Performance

  • Perform rhythms independently and in ensemble
  • Create and perform original rhythms
  • Perform concert music alone and with others
  • Identify and discuss elements of music
  • Understand purpose and expectations of performance

Semester 2

Unit 3: Spring Performance

  • Analyze repertoire for technical considerations
  • Connect with history and meaning of music

  • Expand rhythm and note reading skills
  • Perform spring concert music independently and in ensemble
