The following learning targets represent the major concepts studied and assessed in this course.

All units are taught simultaneously throughout the year.

Unit 1: Posture and Technique

• Identify parts of the guitar
• Follow rehearsal norms and procedures
• Demonstrate correct positioning of left and right hands
• Develop proper playing posture and technique

Unit 2: Music Theory and Notation

• Develop melodic and rhythmic sight-reading skills
• Read chord symbols
• Navigate basic music forms
• Interpret musical expressions and articulations

Unit 3: Listening and Evaluating

• Practice self-evaluation
• Listen to and evaluate performances of others
• Explore different responses to music
• Explore various musical genres that feature guitar

Unit 4: Performance

• Demonstrate skills through playing assessments
• Perform repertoire demonstrating technique and musical understanding
