Welcome to the Virtual Learning hub for the Independence School District. Whether you're enrolled in full-time online learning or temporarily learning from home, this page is your go-to resource for tools, support, and information. Virtual learning is available to students who request and are approved for this learning method, or because they are assigned Virtual Learning as part of a discipline plan (Alternative Placement).
Criteria for Virtual Learning requests
Requests for placement in Virtual Learning will be considered only for students who meet the criteria listed below:
-
Enrolled in public school for the entire semester prior to the virtual request.
-
Successful completion of past virtual classes.
-
Maintained 90% attendance for in-person or virtual learning during the prior school year.
-
If attended virtual last year, then consistent daily attendance will be reviewed.
-
On pace academically with their peers -or- on pace to graduate with their cohort (secondary).
-
Demonstrates internal motivation to complete past asynchronous and synchronous classes.
-
Scored Proficient or Advanced on past State Assessments.
-
Participated in all ISD Benchmark and Common Assessments.
While the parent/guardian may request for their student to attend school virtually, in each case, the IEP team or Section 504 committee of the student (which includes the parent/guardian) is responsible for making the determination of whether Virtual Learning is in the best interest of the student.
Students who do not meet the items outlined above must remain in an in-person learning environment.
Virtual Learning as an Alternative Placement
A Long-Term Suspension (LTS) or placement in Virtual Learning by the Discipline Hearing Officer qualifies a student for Virtual Learning in the ISD.
You can find Discipline information in Board of Education Policy, as well as in the Student-Parent Handbooks, which are signed and acknowledged by parents/student as a required step upon registration.
What is MOCAP?
The state requires every district in Missouri to provide access to information about MOCAP. When a student enrolls with a MOCAP vendor, it functions much like a transfer to another district for in-person learning. Although the student continues to reside within ISD boundaries, their enrollment is officially transferred to the district that oversees the virtual provider.
