Family School Liaisons (FSLs) in the ISD serve as a vital link between home, school, and community as members of the Family Services Department. They work to support students and families by building strong relationships, connecting them with helpful resources, and removing barriers to learning so every student can succeed.
Family Services Department Overview
The Independence School District Family Services Department provides support services in the areas of health, mental health and crisis intervention aimed at improving student outcomes. Family Services staff members provide a strengths-based, holistic service approach that engages families as partners in the process.
Since 1992, Family School Liaisons (FSLs) have helped families send their children to school ready to learn, helped parents be effective partners in their students' education and have created opportunities for children and families to be safe, healthy and lifelong learners. FSLs help families cope with crisis or problem areas in their lives, conduct comprehensive assessments, and assist with goal planning, and connect students and families to needed resources in school and community.

Family Services Department Purpose Statement
Through a strengths-based partnership, families and schools will ensure the safety, well-being, and educational success of every child.
Family School Liaisons (FSLs) are essential support professionals assigned to every ISD school. We collaborate with students, families, staff, and community partners to remove obstacles that hinder learning and student success. FSLs provide personalized referrals and connect families to critical resources including healthcare, counseling, emergency assistance, and more.
Rooted in a strengths-based, family-centered approach, FSLs view families as active partners in the educational journey. In addition to responding to immediate needs, we offer proactive, preventive support focused on child development, mental and physical wellness, safety, and overall family engagement.
Our goal is to create lasting partnerships that empower families and enrich each the student learning experience.
