Medication Guidelines

We encourage families to give medication at home whenever possible, using a schedule that avoids school hours. If a healthcare provider determines that a student must take medication during school, the following guidelines apply:

General Rules

  • A written order from a licensed physician is required for all prescribed medications.

  • The first dose of any new medication must be given at home.

  • Medication must be delivered to the school health clinic by a parent, guardian, or a designated adult (in writing).

  • A medication consent form must be completed before any medication can be administered.

  • Students may not carry medication (prescription or over-the-counter) on the bus, in school, or at school activities. Violation of this policy may result in suspension.

  • It is the student’s responsibility to report to the health clinic when it is time for medication.

Prescription Medications

Must be in the original container with the current date and a pharmacy label that includes:

  • Student’s name

  • Medication name

  • Quantity

  • Dosage and route

  • Time(s) of administration

  • Prescribing physician’s name

Any change in dosage or time must be accompanied by a new written physician’s order.

Middle and high school students may self-carry and self-administer inhalers, EpiPens, or diabetic supplies only with physician approval and parental consent.

Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medications

Must be in the original container and delivered by a parent, guardian, or designated adult. A written physician’s order is required, including:

  • Student’s name

  • Date

  • Physician’s name

  • Medication name

  • Dosage, frequency, route, and quantity

If a standing order exists for the OTC medication, a parent/guardian must still complete the consent form.

Medications Provided by the School Clinic

The health clinic stocks basic supplies and emergency medications, including:

Safety and Disposal

  • Only FDA-approved medications will be administered.

  • Doses must follow accepted medical reference guidelines. Nurses may decline to administer medication if concerns arise.

  • Unused medication will be disposed of according to FDA recommendations, at the end of the school year if not picked up by parent/guardian. Any medication not picked up within 5 days of discontinuation or notification will be destroyed.
