THS Coterie Theatre 1.15Two Truman students, Shealyn Hedrick and Matthew Bourgeois, join a select group of other Kansas City-area high school students as members of The Coterie’s Young Playwrights’ Roundtable. Those two were accepted to the highly-acclaimed program following their completion of The Coterie’s Reaching the Write Minds workshop, a unique dramatic writing program for emerging teen playwrights. Hedrick and Bourgeois were chosen out of more than 400 students from across the Kansas City area.

“Being part of the Young Playwrights’ Roundtable is a great accomplishment,” said Jeff Church, The Coterie’s artistic director. “We are excited about the submissions we have received from young writers throughout the area.”

Hedrick, Bourgeois and other Roundtable members will meet and discuss their developing plays during a series of Sunday afternoon work sessions. Some of the plays will go directly from paper to stage and be featured during The Coterie’s annual Young Playwrights Festival in May.

Established in 1979, The Coterie is a non-profit organization providing professional theatre and educational outreach programs to students across the Kansas City area.
