New ISD Logo CMYK After learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., fifth-graders at Fairmount Elementary were inspired to follow in his footsteps. They were particularly inspired by King’s words when he said, “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.” and “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?” So, they challenged themselves to complete 100 acts of service and set several guidelines that had to be followed.

An act of service was defined as any kind act done for someone else without them asking you or expecting you to do it. Students had to do all their acts of service on their own time, outside of school hours and had to have all 100 acts done by the 100th day of school- giving them just one week to complete the task!

The hashtag #100serviceacts was created to track student progress through social media. Not only did the students do 100 acts of service within a week, they inspired a class of third- and fourth-graders from Chicago to do the same, using the same #100serviceacts hashtag to chronicle their progress. Being kind and doing kind things for others left quite an impression on the Fairmount students.

“What I liked about our acts of service was that we helped others and made their day happier,” said Nitzia Castillo, Fairmount fifth-grader
