A send-off ice cream social inside the Independence branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City was the final stop for William Chrisman’s Courtney Calhoun before heading to Jefferson City for the Boys & Girls Clubs State Youth of the Year competition. More than 100 Boys & Girls Club members and supporters came to the ice cream social to wish her luck.

Calhoun, the Boys & Girls Clubs Greater Kansas City Youth of the Year, is very active at school and at the Boys & Girls Club. She participates in speech, debate, choir, golf and student leadership at Chrisman and at the Club, she can often be found mentoring younger members or leading community service projects. Courtney is very driven and plans to be the first in her family to graduate from college.

Courtney exemplifies being a student leader. Her story and dedication to helping others is inspiring. She has already overcome difficult personal challenges, including a stretch of homelessness. The Boys and Girls Clubs helped her family through that and she is giving back to the organization through countless of hours of public service.
