Freshman 4-8-2015+Concert 4-8-2014+It is not uncommon for Truman High School music students to earn ‘1’ ratings in state music competitions, but what Truman’s musicians and vocalists did during the MSHSAA State Festival in Lee’s Summit was virtually unheard of. Every Truman large ensemble- nine in all- received a ‘1’ rating.

“In my 21 years here at Truman I don’t believe that this feat has ever been accomplished,” said Todd Reinhardt, Truman’s director of bands.

The Freshman Band earned the first ‘1’ rating, followed by the Concert Band, Symphonic Orchestra and Concert Orchestra. Then, under Reinhardt’s direction, it was the Symphonic Band’s. “I can tell you I was starting to feel the pressure of not wanting to break the streak,” he exclaimed. The Truman vocal department picked up where the band and orchestra left off.

Truman’s Trutones grabbed the ‘1’ rating for the department and set the stage for the rest of the school’s vocalists.

“As each group went on to perform, the kids were aware of all groups receiving 1 ratings and no one wanted to be a part of the group that broke the streak,” said Kim Evans, Truman’s music teacher.  Truman’s Concert Choir, Truman’s Men’s Choir and the Truman Women’s Choir all earned ‘1’ ratings- making the nine for nine dream a reality.

“Vocal students knew full well they could make it a clean sweep for the music department and they did not disappoint,” Reinhardt said. “We, as a department, are so proud of the work and effort these students put in to earn this distinction.

“They represented Truman High School on the highest level!”
