imagesJROTC members from Van Horn, Truman and William Chrisman High School are providing the Color Guard and assisting with a wreath laying ceremony September 11 on the grounds of the Harry S. Truman Library & Museum. While four cadets present the colors, the others will accompany Czech Ambassador Petr Gandalovic and Slovak Ambassador Peter Kmec as they pay their respects to President Truman and commemorate Sept. 11 by laying a wreath on the president’s gravesite in the library’s courtyard.

“It is rare for both the Czech and Slovak ambassador to be in the Kansas City area at the same time,” said Ross Marine, honorary consul of the Slovak Republic to the Midwest USA, “so we are grateful for the cadets participation in this historic event.” The theme of their two day official visit to Missouri is ‘The Celebration of Czech and Slovaks Collaboration.’

Cadets taking part in the ceremony are Destany Williamson, Brianna Durham, Travis Riley, David Knouse, Nick Hickman, Zeb Lityma and Dominick Chavez from Van Horn, Kat Rice and Britany Hanks from William Chrisman and Kenny Ward from Truman High School.

“The opportunity for our student-cadets to be part of an official activity with two members of the ambassadorial corps will be unique and exciting,” said retired Lt. Col. Michael Byrd, Van Horn’s senior JROTC instructor.
