Looking to increase the number of low income and minority students entering post-high school health care training programs, the ISD is one of seven Kansas City, Mo. area school districts receiving a KC HealthTracks grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health through a partnership with the UMKC School of Nursing and Health Studies and the KC Stem Alliance.

Split between 11 high schools including Truman, Van Horn and William Chrisman, the five year, $2.5 million grant will support Project Lead The Way (PLTW) biomedical science teachers and provide and coordinate outside-the-classroom educational experiences for students. During the first year of the grant, the ISD will receive almost $30,000 to support teachers and underserved PLTW biomedical science students.

KC HealthTracks was created to increase the number of financially disadvantaged, minority and aspiring first generation college students entering into health care career opportunities. Participating school districts include the ISD, North Kansas City, Center, Grandview, Fort Osage, Kansas City Public Schools and Hickman Mills.
