Several Van Horn Students Awarded at Science and Engineering Fair

23Hard work and good ideas were honored when several Van Horn High School science students took home regional awards from the 64th Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair (GKCSEF) inside Bartle Hall.  The most highly-decorated project was the brainchild of Van Horn Junior Chase Wilburn and Sophomore Destany Williamson. Their engineering project- The Development of an Electromagnetic Self-Charging Cell Phone Case– received awards from The Office of Naval Research Science, Walton Sustainability Solutions, The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and The Society of Military Engineers.

Van Horn Junior Raymond Kistner’s project- The Determination of Phosphate and Nitrate Levels in Water Samples from Western Independence– won the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Best Chemical Engineering Project certificate and the United States Air Force Science Award certificate.  Other award winners included Arianny Pujos and Naomi Kroeger and the following students were invited to display their projects at the Linda Hall Library Science Fair Exhibition at UMKC in April:  Jonathan Diaz, Trevor Clay, Lauren Hopkins, Chase Wilburn, Destany Williamson, and Julie Vaughan.  Other participants included sophomores Mirinda Holthe, who was considered for the BioGENEius Award and Destiny Walcott, who was awarded a gold ribbon.

Students qualified for the regional science fair by winning a division medal at the local science fair held at Van Horn in February.
